Annual to Hourly Salary Calculator
How It Works
Salary offers are almost always quoted as an annual number, but most of us think about our time in hours. Knowing what your salary works out to per hour helps you make better decisions — whether you're evaluating a job offer, figuring out whether overtime pay is worth it, or comparing a full-time role to a freelance contract.
The conversion is straightforward: divide your annual salary by the total number of hours you work each year. For a standard 40-hour, 52-week schedule, that's 2,080 hours. A $52,000 salary works out to exactly $25.00 per hour. But any deviation from that standard schedule — fewer hours, unpaid leave, a compressed workweek — changes the real hourly equivalent.
Your effective hourly rate matters most when comparing offers. If you're currently earning $60,000 per year working 45 hours a week, your true hourly rate is $60,000 ÷ (45 × 52) = $25.64/hr. An offer of $55,000 with a genuine 40-hour expectation pays $26.44/hr — actually more per hour despite the lower headline number.
For salaried employees, understanding your hourly equivalent is also useful when evaluating overtime. If you frequently work 50–60 hour weeks with no overtime compensation, your effective hourly rate drops significantly from what you'd calculate on a 40-hour basis. This calculator makes that visible.
This tool also provides the full salary breakdown: monthly take-home before taxes, biweekly paycheck amount, weekly earnings, and daily rate. These figures are useful for budget planning. Most fixed expenses (rent, mortgage, subscriptions) are monthly; groceries and variable spending are roughly weekly. Seeing your income mapped to each timeframe makes it easier to understand your real financial capacity.
Note that all figures here are gross (before tax). Use the Take-Home Pay Calculator to see your actual net income after federal and state taxes, Social Security, and Medicare are deducted.
Formula Breakdown
Annual to Hourly conversion: Hourly Rate = Annual Salary ÷ (Hours Per Week × Weeks Per Year) Example: $52,000 ÷ (40 × 52) = $52,000 ÷ 2,080 = $25.00/hr Derived breakdowns: - Monthly = Annual ÷ 12 = $4,333.33 - Biweekly = (Annual ÷ Weeks Per Year) × 2 = $2,000.00 - Weekly = Annual ÷ Weeks Per Year = $1,000.00 - Daily = Annual ÷ (Weeks Per Year × 5) = $200.00
